Corona Virus part III: Still a strong impact on production

Scroll down for English.

Situatieschets

“It makes me crazy,” zoals hij zelf zegt.

Kane

English version

A new week, a new update. The Corona Virus doesn’t let itself be tamed that easily; something we notice now more than ever. China tries to contain the virus with power and strength with weekly measurements for its population. Measurements that have effects on our activities.

A number of our customers gave us their trust by placing new orders, and make a down payment. Thanks a lot! This is the trust we passed along to our suppliers by giving them the down payment. We now hope they will start our orders as soon as they have full capacity, because naturally they’ve got a great amount of orders to start.

It’s important to keep up with the latest development in China. This is the current situation according to our Chinese colleagues:

The current situation: production

This weekend we received some bad news again from our Chinese colleagues. Some of them received the message to stay at home for some more time. In fact, they will be prosecutable if they go outside. However, the communication differs, depending on the provinces they stay in. This is also noticeable by our suppliers. Little by little manufacturers getting started again, but with limited capacity of employees. This situation could be well described by the situation of out colleagues.

Read more about the specific situation of our suppliers.

Schumi

Our Quality Inspector Schumi is hitten hard by the virus and the measurements. He travelled back to his family for Chinese Newyears’ in Xiaogan: the second most contaminated area of China. Ever since, he can’t go outside anymore. Xiaogan is a city in de province of Hubei, next to the city of Wuhan, where the Corona Virus is originated. For Schumi this means he stays inside the house for weeks now. For an example, he has to pass along his groceries to an appointed person who goes grocery shopping in completely virus prove clothing. For him, it’s unclear when he can come back to Tangxia, the city where our office is established. “It makes me crazy,” like he says himself.

Kane

Despite the inconvenience of Schumi being in quarantine, not being able to perform quality checks next weeks, we got lucky. Namely, we hired a second Quality Inspector next to Schumi! Our new colleague Kane will start next Monday, and will be incorporated at a distance by Schumi via Skype.

Vanessa

Vanessa travelled back to her place of birth in the province of Hunan for the Chinese New Year. This weekend she travelled back to Tangxia, but has to stay in quarantine at home for at least another week, because Hunan is a risk area. Her brother currently stays at her place, and for an example he has to measure his temperature three times a day and report this to his boss. If his temperature stays stable for another week, he can start working again.

Boly

Luckily, Boly were already in Dongguan, so he has a relatively low risk on getting contaminated. According to the government he could go back to work as for today, but he stays at home for another week for safety. Besides, a lot of the activities he normally does at the office, he can also do on remote. Last week this wasn’t the case yet, because he had to stay inside. But he received the message that an important sample was delivered at our office. So our driven Boly took his scooter and his mouth cap, and drove 2,5 hours to our office and back to get the sample!

Jodina

Jodina also already were in Dongguan and has little chance to be contaminated. She could also go to the office. However, Jodina also stays home for another week, just to be sure. Besides, she is almost out of mouth caps, because those aren’t obtainable anymore. And a mouth cap can be used for just one week.

Without the mouth cap she’s not allowed to enter the bus, train or other public facilities.

The factories

Our suppliers have to deal with the same problems: part of their employees is still in quarantine. The factories that already started their productions again are mainly the bigger factories. For the small factories – that are often our sub suppliers – this virus has a lot of impact. Their capacity and turnover depend on the seriousness of the Corona Virus, what is too much to take financially for a lot of them. Often, they deliver the smaller parts of an assembled production. If this smaller part can’t be delivered, it means the whole production can’t be assembled. Beyond that, this virus is disastrous for those manufacturers, what’s even worse of course.

The impact of the Corona Virus on China, on our colleagues and our activities is still strong. But it looks like more factories open every week, so we have good hope for next Monday. <b>Vanessa, Boly and Jodina (in all probability) will be back at the office by then<b>. That’s not only good for us, but mostly for them, because after five weeks of quarantine it will be a relief to be outside again!

Still we put safety first, just like China itself. We shall always follow the guidelines and measurements China sets out to ensure the health of our colleagues.
